Collision With a Biker in China

There are so many tough moments when living abroad. Times when things are confusing, irritating, or infuriating. One that made me particularly uncomfortable and nervous was when I was in China. I was in a cab with my friend, and It stopped to let us out and had pulled onto the sidewalk, which was very common. I opened my car door to hop out, and it hit someone on a bicycle. He fell off the bike and landed on the pavement. I got out of the taxi, and so did the driver and my friend. We helped the man up, and he checked over the bike.

He seemed fine, and so did the bike. At this point a crowd had started to gather, since a foreigner in some kind of altercation was pretty interesting. The man started to ask me for money. I thought about it, and had enough money on me that I could probably have bought him a new bike, but I thought he was clearly taking advantage of me, because the bike looked fine to me. I was also worried that if the gathering crowd saw me handing out money, it might cause others to try and get money from me.

What would you have done?

So, what happened?
